Baby Product Newsfrom About.com CPSC: Pampers Dry Max Diaper Rash is a Mystery CPSC and Health Canada have investigated complaints about Pampers new Dry Max diapers, and these agencies say they can't find a definitive link between the new diaper technology and the terrible diaper rashes that have been reported. CPSC has received more than 4,500 reports of Pampers Dry Max diaper rashes since April of this year. Both CPSC and Health Canada looked at information provided by the diaper manufacturer, as well as chemistry, toxicology and pediatrics information from many sources, but they are unable to pinpoint anything about the diapers that would cause the severe diaper rashes that parents have reported. CPSC was careful to note in a press release that they recognize the "serious concerns expressed by parents" and that they "cannot rule out that there may exist a health concern for some babies, especially those babies that may be sensitive and develop rashes or other skin problems as a result of contact with the materials in this or other products." Even my niece, who is not normally prone to diaper rashes, ended up with a rash when my sister switched to Dry Max diapers. While most kids get diaper rash at some point, it seems strange that so many parents reported unusual diaper rashes right after the switch to this type of diaper. CPSC suggests that you switch diapers if your baby appears to be sensitive to one type, and that you discuss the problem with your pediatrician. CPSC is still taking reports about Pampers Dry Max diaper rashes. The TravelMate is a set of wheels and a handle that attaches to most convertible and combination car seats. Instead of carrying the car seat through the airport, you can just roll it along, even with your baby or toddler buckled into it. Having the TravelMate wheels on my niece's car seat made it so easy to get through the airport quickly. If adult hands were needed elsewhere, my young daughter could easy manage rolling the car seat. There's no way she could carry a heavy Britax seat on her own! We also didn't need to wait on a gate-checked stroller in order to move to the next flight. My niece's car seat came off the plane with the wheels still attached, and was ready to roll on to the next location. While the GoGoKidz TravelMate is a little pricey at about $80, it's worth it if you travel very often. The cost could be made up quickly if your airline charges a checked bag fee for car seats. Through Sept. 19, you can earn a 25 percent discount on many new baby products at Toys R Us or Babies R Us when you bring in the old stuff to trade. You can bring in old car seats, strollers, high chairs, cribs or bassinets to receive the 25 percent discount coupon. That discount must be used on the same day as your trade-in, and you have to use it in the store, not online. The discount can be used to buy a new crib, high chair, bassinet, car seat, stroller, travel system, play yard or toddler bed. Only certain brands are participating in this program, but most of the major baby gear manufacturers are represented. Don't have any used baby products sitting around to trade? One resourceful parent-to-be that I know is offering to haul off her neighbors' old cribs and expired car seats in order to save money on some items from her baby registry. The neighbors are happy because they gained some garage space without any effort! SkinnyKidz Belts ©2010, SkinnyKidz.com.I can't tell you how many times in my daughter's life I wished for a new way to keep her pants from sliding down her nearly non-existent bum. Sure, we opted for adjustable waists whenever possible, but not all clothing is available with that option, sometimes the elastics wear out, and sometimes the pants didn't adjust enough for my skinny-minny. These SkinnyKidz belts are a perfect solution for kids who accidentally escape their pants due to a too-big waistband. You slide the belt through the belt loops on the back and sides of the pants, and then fasten the ends around the front belt loops. The completely genius part of these belts is that they don't fasten in the front. Do you hear that, moms of potty training toddlers? That's right. All the benefits of a belt, without adding a step between your toddler and the potty. SkinnyKidz Belts are available in several colors and patterns, and they come in two sizes to fit 9 months through 2T and 3T through size 6. The belts cost about $15 each. Cute Accessory Alert! While other studies have shown that booster seats provide the best protection for this age group, this is the first time a study has looked at injury reduction by comparing injury rates before and after a state law change. As a child passenger safety technician, and as a parent who worked to pass a booster law in my own state, this study pleases me on several levels. It's always good to see injury rates going down, but the demonstrated increase in booster use in New York also shows that many parents do respond to booster laws. Whether the parents do so happily or not, if the end result is fewer injuries to children, I count that as major success. The study took data from the two years prior to the state law change and compared them to the three years following, according to MSNBC. Injury rates for kids age 4 to 6 went down by 18 percent, while booster usage went up from 29 percent to 50 percent. The study is from the New York State Department of Health and was published in Pediatrics.
